![]() To him Ryder is just a cool dude with some cute puppies, not a dangerous supervillain in the making. My kid loves everything that drives me to despair about Paw Patrol. Oh, and Ryder is also working on a robotic dog, which sets up an eventual episode where the Paw Patrol, steamrollered by technology, find themselves saddled with such a profound lack of purpose that they all become grizzled alcoholics. Every episode – with the possible exception of the one where all the puppies turn into mermaids – is exactly the same. The puppies will work together to fix the boat, then they’ll be rewarded with a treat while Ryder presumably keeps the bulk of the financial reward himself. This will always include Chase, the bum-licking, sycophantic self-appointed leader of the group and very rarely include Zuma (the puppy with a boat) because Ryder has got a jet-ski of his own and wants all the credit for himself. Then he’ll call upon some of the puppies to help him. Ryder will summon the five puppies to his tower to show them a lengthy PowerPoint presentation on the nature of the emergency – even though, all the while, the boat is still sinking. The mayor, a woman who routinely ignores her civic duties to chase her pet chicken around, will inadvertently cause an emergency. Here’s what happens in an average episode. Twenty years from now when a grownup fan makes a knowing Paw Patrol revival movie, Ryder will be depicted as a cackling maniac with an unstoppable God complex, but for now all this is implied. These puppies can talk, and they call him Sir. ![]() Ryder – who lives in a glass tower high above the civilised world – has coerced a team of five puppies into providing the sole emergency services for his city. ![]() If you’ve never seen Paw Patrol, it’s essentially about Ryder, a boy whose parents didn’t tell him no enough, and the megalomaniacal world he’s created for himself. But a line was crossed while my back was turned, and now my kid has bought into Paw Patrol wholesale.

The goal of the game is to use up the deck and get rid of all the cards. The Jack, King and Queen can only be removed if they’re taken from the deck at the same time and have the same suit. ![]() These pairs can now be laid aside and the gaps filled with new cards taken from the deck. In these 16 cards, you look for two cards of the same suit with a total value of 11. To play this game, shuffle a standard 52-card deck, then lay out four rows of four cards face up. The next German card game you can play by yourself is called Die Farbenelf (roughly, “the colorful eleven”). If any of these cards are an Ace or a King matching the top card in the rows, you’ve lost. Once you’ve finished laying out all the cards you can, turn over the four cards still laying face down on the table. If you pull a King, you can start a new row. Now draw a card from the deck and place it where it belongs, if possible. Place the additional cards under the correct suits in order. You need to rearrange the cards at the top so that they run from Ace to King. Four additional cards are placed face down on the table. Start with 12 cards laid out face up in three rows of four. To play this game, you need a standard deck of 52 cards. If you’re all by yourself, but still in the mood for a good card game, play a few rounds of the German solitaire game Auf Wiedersehen (Farewell). Is someone playing dirty in the game? Then yell out, “Hey, du schummelst!” (“Hey, you’re cheating!”) One-player German Card Games ![]() Spieler is the word for “player” in German (it’s also the word for “gambler”).ĭu bist dran means “your turn.” Unfair (pronounced “oonfair”) means, you guessed it, “unfair.” A Jack is a Bube – an old-fashioned German word for “boy.” A Queen is a Dame (which translates to “lady”) and the King is the König (literal translation this time). There are many more card games which enjoy local popularity, but may not be known elsewhere. Mau Mau is a very simple game which is also popular throughout Germany especially amongst children, UNO is essentially the commercial version of it. Schafkopf is traditionally played in Bavaria (South-East), Doppelkopf is more popular in the West and North, and Skat originates in the East, but has gain a lot of traction elsewhere since it is the most tactical variant and often played competitively. Skat, Doppelkopf and Schafkopf are amongst the most popular, they are very similar to each other and pretty tactical. Germany has a strong tradition with respect to card games, as a result the most popular game varies by region. ![]() In the section below, we’ve popped in the most FAQs that we’ve received. We’ve had a lot of questions over the years asking about everything from which bars in Dublin do live music on Sundays to where to listen to trad. If you have a place that you’d like to recommend, let me know in the comments below and I’ll check it out! FAQs about live music pubs in Dublin I’ve no doubt that we’ve unintentionally left out some brilliant places to catch live music in Dublin tonight from the guide above. Live music sessions take place regularly. When you walk inside Nancy’s, you’ll be greeted by an authentic Victorian bar that looks more antique shop than public house.Īrguably the finest feature here is the staircase, which previously called Trinity College ‘home’. You’ll find it on Parkgate Street, a 5-minute walk from The Phoenix Park. Last and by no means least is one of the most unique pubs with live music in Dublin – Nancy Hands. You’ll find music here regularly, however, keep in mind that it isn’t always trad (it’s a lot less touristy than many of the other Temple Bar pubs). One of the most overlooked pubs with live music in Dublin is the Auld Dub. However, the Quays and the Vat House are two other popular spots, too. The most popular are The Temple Bar Pub and Oliver St. So, there’s a load of pubs in Temple Bar that run live music sessions 7 days a week. Trad sessions run in the bar at the weekends, led by Uilleann Piper, Néillidh Mulligan. The Mulligans, owners of The Cobblestone, have been musicians for generations, so what better business for them to be in than a pub offering traditional Irish music. Barely a minute’s walk from the Smithfield LUAS stop is The Cobblestone Pub, where trad sessions take place Monday to Sunday. Next up is one of the more popular pubs with live music in Dublin. Make sure you don’t leave without wandering around to look at the photos and documents on the walls (see our guide to the oldest pubs in Dublin for more places like this). Often, the musicians set up around a table and play for the crowd. Sunday trad sessions in the courtyard from 3:30 – 6:30 pm are a magnet for tourists who love singing along. It has a wonderful, old-world feel to it, from the exterior to the many nooks and crannies inside. ![]() The oldest pub in Dublin, The Brazen Head, is a series of rooms with lots of beamed ceilings and Irish paraphernalia. There’s live music seven nights a week and the food here (going off Google Reviews) is the bees-knees. Darkey Kellysĭarkey Kellys on Fishamble Street is one of the finest traditional pubs with live music in Dublin City Centre, and you’ll find it a stone’s throw from Temple Bar and Christ Church Cathedral.ĭarkey Kelly’s has a nice old-school feel to it and, unlike some nearby pubs that tend to attract tourists in Dublin, the service here is top-notch. You can even grab a bus from Dublin City for €10 return that’ll take you to and from the pub. Johnny Fox’s is the most famous pub with live music in Dublin, and you’ll find it in the Dublin Mountains in Glencullen and their Hooley Show is the stuff of local legend. Yes, it’s a pub tourists love but, speaking as someone that’s lived in Dublin all his life, I’d happily visit here several times each year. So, some people from Dublin tend to stick their noses up at Johnny Fox’s, claiming it’s ‘Just a touristy spot’, which isn’t the case. ![]() Ray refuses and is given the same punishment. After Mae Rose gives birth to a biracial boy, Abernathy furiously demands to know who is the father. Despite his talent, Can't-Get-Right is often distracted by Mae Rose, the daughter of Camp 8's superintendent Abernathy. Sensing an opportunity for freedom, Ray and Claude introduce themselves as his handlers. In 1944, twelve years later, Claude and Ray meet young, mute inmate "Can't-Get-Right", a talented baseball player who is sighted by a Negro league scout who offers a pardon to play. With no chance at freedom, Claude and Ray break out, getting as far as Tallahatchie before being captured. Claude's cousin, an attorney, unsuccessfully appeals his conviction and seduces his girlfriend (who’s grown tired of Claude’s selfishness). They immediately run afoul of the guards, Sergeant Dillard and Hoppin' Bob, and also meet fellow inmates Jangle Leg (who makes a pass at Claude), Willie Long, Biscuit (another homosexual inmate, involved with Jangle Leg), Radio, Goldmouth (a bully who picks a fight with Ray, but befriends him afterward), Cookie the chef, and Pokerface. She definitely has "Scream Queen" potential, and I'd love to see her in something that packs a bigger punch. None of the performances particularly stood out, but it was exciting to see Pose's Moore in a horror setting. However, all of the new characters were fine additions, with Thomas Cocquerel, Holland Roden, Indya Moore, and Carlito Olivero joining in on the fun. Sony is clearly aiming to create a franchise, and this idea would have been way cooler had they saved it as a fourth or fifth installment with a group of winners we'd seen before. While the "Tournament of Champions" is a fun concept, it's hard not to wish they had used the idea further down the road. It's not long after Zoey and Ben reach New York that they end up trapped in a new escape room, this time with four others who were all subjected to Minos' torture in the past. While this made for a rough start, especially when compared to the first movie's intense opening, Tournament of Champions eventually finds its rhythm. If you don't trust your audience enough to remember the events of the first movie, at least find a creative way to do your recap. The Escape Room sequel kicks off in the most obnoxious way possible with a recap of the first movie akin to a network TV show's "Previously On" segment. While Tournament of Champions doesn't do much to elevate the genre, it's basically Saw for tweens, and makes for a nice option for any horror fan who can't get into R-rated movies. If you're a fan of Escape Room, then you will surely enjoy the follow-up, which is no better and no worse than its predecessor. As teased at the end of the first film, the duo heads to New York City with the hopes of exposing Minos, the company behind the escape rooms, and their sinister games. Escape Room: Tournament of Champions is the first follow-up to the 2019 horror movie Escape Room and sees the return of Taylor Russell as Zoey Davis and Logan Miller as Ben Miller, the "winners" of the first movie's rooms. So what idea had captured my attention this time? For those of you who have been following me for a little while, you may remember the concept behind my “ Angles with Ease” book and Triangler ruler. I guess the creative side of my brain just doesn’t take orders well from the sensible, follow-the-rules, orderly side of my brain. I had like 10 more ideas that I could have put into this book if I had the time. And every year I promise my husband that I will do a smaller book! I’m really not a liar. ![]() Turns out that starting early thing just meant more time for my crazy brain to formulate more ideas. I didn’t finish months in advance as I had planned, while sitting in an easy chair with my feet up. That starting early thing? It didn’t work out so well for me. Somehow this has turned into my largest book to date (except this one, which I did with a publisher). ![]() You know how some people nap when their kids nap? I used that time to work on these ideas and I thrived on my time alone to create.Īll those ideas became the quilts in my latest book, “Angles With Ease 2”. Strange right? I guess you never know where ideas will come from. I suddenly found myself with an abundance of ideas as my brain tried to cope with my new occupation as a stay at home (and work at home) mom. Apparently, my brain doesn’t function well with no time to sew and pursue ideas. Well – all that taking care of kids, doing laundry, making meals and being the cheerful, domestic goddess that I am (not!), turned out to be just the fuel that I needed to create. And I intended to do a small book, with just a few projects. How would I ever get the book done with two little munchkins? I try to spend as much time as possible with the kids and everything that entails, so I figured I better start way earlier if I was going to find the time to do it. I knew I had to start early because I have a 2-year-old and a baby. I actually have proof of how early I started – two of my photos in the new book were shot last fall (see fall photos below). Market preparations are in high gear, with all the usual craziness – even though I started way earlier than I typically do. ![]() Cabelas is the only place I've seen them in person, and I liked the construction.Ģ0. They are just a tad heavier than the Rubbermaid container, and about $40ea for the smaller size which is has a 20-21 gallon capacity (depending what site you look at), and is 30"Lx15.4"Wx16"H in size. Otherwise I'd be all over it because they're stronger than the Action Packer, have a weather-tight lid with a gasket, and they have indentions on the lid to match the feet on the bottom so they are stackable. Whatever I have, I want to have the option to carry it inside or outside the vehicle. So far the best alternative I've found to the Action Packer is made by a company called Iris, but it is too long to fit behind the upright back seat of my FJ Cruiser. Where's Corey? He's had just about every container imaginable. The Action Packer has sort of become the go-to camping box for quite a while now because once you step up from Rubbermaid-ish storage containers the prices can go waaaay up. In the end everyone has to find the compromise between weight-savings, durability, and the almighty $$$$ that works for them. If only they made the bottom like they did the top. Unfortunately the Packers' lightweight, blow-molded construction for the bottom section is also it's weak spot. That's something that's definitely in the Action Packers' favor. Something like the ECS Cases Footlocker series has six sizes and 8 colors available, is proven to be watertight, has interlocking shapes on the lid and bottom for great stackability, can take serious abuse, and is 10x more expensive than my 24gal Action Packer. Action Packers don't come in many sizes, aren't really weather-resistant, and can be cratered with some abuse, but they really are not that expensive to replace. There are lots of alternatives worth spending your hard-earned $$$ on, but that choice is yours to base on things like budget and how hard/how long you intend to use/need something. Like me most start with Action Packers or something similar and then quickly realize you want it to be sturdier for stacking/strapping down, more water resistant for carrying outside the vehicle, or a more specific size that Rubbermaid doesn't make in order to fit right inside your rig when it's stuffed to the gills. I can find them in at least 3 stores in my town (maybe 4). Not saying you don't get what you pay for with regards to Pelican, Hardigg, ECS, Alu-Box, Zarges, etc, etc, but Action Packers are actually pretty cheap in the grand scheme of things and very easy to come by. The price was great, and I was glad we didn't need to get something more specialized and/or heavy-duty.The Action Packer has sort of become the go-to camping box for quite a while now because once you step up from Rubbermaid-ish storage containers the prices can go waaaay up. When it was time to come home, everything went back in without issue. Since our needs for campouts don't translate to a lot of dividers, we just put bigger, heavier things on the bottom and worked our way up. You could fit many different sizes of boxes/drawers/whatever inside to suit your needs. I like that it's just a big empty space inside, so that I can choose how much or little I want to divvy it up.
